Southwestern College Reduces Credit Hour Requirements

Southwestern college takes a proactive stance against rising tuition costs by reducing credit hour requirements.

Over the past two years, the leadership of Southwestern College (http://swc.edu) has worked on keeping their graduate school on the leading edge. Southwestern College offers a Masters Degree in Counseling and Art Therapy as well as Certificate Programs. For academic year 2012-13, they froze tuition prices while they researched other strategies. For upcoming academic year 2013-14, they have analyzed their total tuition costs, licensing requirements across the country, and they conducted an internal assessment of individual courses relative to the Master’s Degree programs offered. The result is a restructuring that reduces the number of credit hours needed while simultaneously not only maintaining the integrity of the program, but bringing it further into alignment with many state licensing boards.

“We see it as a ‘win-win’ for everyone,” says Dru Phoenix, Southwestern College Director of Admissions.

Students entering the college in the Fall 2013 will now only require 91 credit hours for graduation rather than the current 98, without affecting degree or licensing choices. Combined with strong scholarship opportunities, the school aims to be accessible to the students who have made Southwestern College their top choice for a Master’s Degree education.

“We pride ourselves on our ability to be at the forefront of mass changes in higher education,” says Southwestern College President Dr. Jim Nolan. “We do so by offering a degree that few others do-- Art Therapy/Counseling, along with our Master’s in Counseling -- in order to provide our students with the greatest career opportunities available. We work on the school internally and externally, for example by also having an established social media presence, and by reducing credit hour requirements and always maintaining the best curriculum possible.”

Southwestern College is a graduate level institution that offers Master’s Degrees in Counseling and Art Therapy in a holistic learning environment. Southwestern is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).
