The American Art Therapy Association re-approves Southwestern College for another seven years.

Students looking to take the next step in their education have many factors to consider. Location, financial aid, class size, and the reputation of the school all factor into the eventual decision. Also of critical importance is the recognition of programs by professional associations. Therefore Southwestern College is proud to announce that the Art Therapy/ Counseling Master’s Degree Program has been granted re-approval by the Education Program Approval Board of the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).

“Every seven years approved programs must submit an extensive self-study in order to be re-approved,” says Debbie Schroder, Art Therapy/Counseling Program Chair. “Approval by the American Art Therapy Association is an incredibly important validation for Southwestern College because it lets current and potential students know that our program is of the highest quality in terms of educating art therapists.”

More than 30 programs across the country have been approved by the AATA, and Southwestern College is the only one currently in the State of New Mexico. For those looking to make their careers in art therapy this is a noteworthy distinction as New Mexico is one of the few states that offer licensure for art therapists.

“We are proud to not only offer the educational experience that students are looking for,” concludes Dr. Jim Nolan, Preident of Southwestern College, “but they also have the peace of mind to know that when they graduate they are well prepared for professional demands that await.”

Now in its 34th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
