Southwestern College recognizes and highlights the unique bond between humans and their animal companions in the blog series.

The care system created by friends, family and even the community at large is acknowledged by many in the healing professions. However, the students and faculty of Southwestern College feel that there is another source of support, intimacy and acceptance, and it is often found within the home. Pets are relatively unheralded and provide perhaps the deepest and most heart-based support that many people encounter.

“These relationships are profound, at the deepest psychological, neurobiological, and even spiritual levels," says Southwestern College President Dr. Jim Nolan. “The connection between people and their pets is something we have seen over and over for both our employees and our counseling clients.”

As a tribute to that unique bond between a person and their pets, the school has established a series of blog posts that discuss the impact animals have had on the lives of their owners. Contributors provide a photo of themselves along with a brief history of their time together, and one recurring theme is the insight and knowledge that the pets impart onto their owners and the way that their mere presence has an uplifting effect.

“It is time for us to celebrate these soul-mates and gurus. For many of us, these little guys -OK, not ALL of them are little- offer the closest thing we may ever experience to unconditional love,” concludes Nolan.
