The Founder Of Southwestern College, Dr. Robert Waterman, Remains With The School More Than 35 Years After Its Founding

Southwestern College was established in 1976 as Quimby College in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Since that time it has undergone many changes, from offering its first classes in 1979, through the move to Santa Fe, the change of the name and many years of steady growth. Throughout it all there has been one constant, Dr. Robert Waterman. He was the first president of the college, and continues on as both president emeritus and as a member of the faculty.

“To have the continued presence of one of the founders of the college is a real inspiration,” says Dr. Jim Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “He has been a guide to decades of students, and to me as well. His desire to see the school succeed is strong and he is willing to work with me when questions arise.”

Waterman and Dr. Neva Del Hunter dedicated the college in 1976 with the mission to be innovative and holistic, and the first classes were offered in 1979. At that time he served as both President and as an instructor. They decided to move the school to Santa Fe in 1981, and the college flourished. In 1996 he stepped aside as president in order to demonstrate to the Higher Learning Commission that the school could thrive without its founder at the helm. However, he has remained an integral person to the institution.

Throughout all the changes, Waterman has remained dedicated to the students, the school and its mission. He continues to teach his signature “Archetypal Psychology” course, and often has waiting lists for his classes. In addition to his work with Southwestern College he also maintains a private practice and also teaches at his own Amenti Mystery School.

“We're honored that Dr. Waterman is still with the school so many years after he founded it,” concludes Nolan. “His vision and teachings continue to positively impact the lives of students and we hope that it will continue for many years to come.”

Now in its 35th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
