Finding the perfect person for a high level position at a college is no easy task. Both the school and the candidate must consider the mission and curriculum of the institution, and how the life experiences and goals of the person mesh with the aim of the school. With that in mind, Southwestern College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is proud to announce that Dr. Ann Filemyr has accepted the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs & Dean.

“When we started the process of looking for a new academic dean we asked our outgoing dean along with other staff who they believed was best suited for the position,” says Dr. Jim Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “Ann was at the top of everybody’s list, and we’re both honored and excited that she accepted the position.”

Dr. Filemyr comes to Southwestern College with a background that fits well with the school’s holistic approach. Her doctorate is in Communications and Environmental Studies. She most recently served as the Dean and Chief Academic Officer at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, Prior to that, she held the position of Vice President and Dean of Faculty at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She also served for two decades as an apprentice to the late Keewayinoquay Peschel, where she assisted in traditional healings, teachings and life ceremonies; Ann continues to teach and lead in the ways she was taught.

She also has an established basis in the arts, with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Creative & Performing Arts, a Master of Art degree in English with a poetry emphasis. She is an accomplished poet and writer, with several books of poetry to her name and chapter contributions in other works.

“Ann’s strong background in education, the arts and traditional healing ceremony align well with the mission of Southwestern College,” concludes Nolan. “She also has a great wealth of experience with accreditation, curriculum development, and assessment of student learning. We’re looking forward to her starting the new school year with us on August 1st.”
