Southwestern College In Santa Fe Announces That Regular Certificate Courses In Infant Mental Health Will Be Offered Starting Fall 2014.

Infant mental health is a specialty that is at the fore of the mental health professions. Understanding the mental health needs of those who are not yet old enough to talk or fully express themselves is a challenge that requires psycho-educational training for the parents and caregivers. In order to address the need for more professionals in the field and to accommodate students and counselors who want to learn more, Southwestern College in Santa Fe is proud to announce a certificate option in Infant Mental Health that will be offered starting in the fall semester of 2014.

“We’re excited to be able to add a specialty in Infant Mental Health to our certificate offerings,” says Dr. James Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “It is by now commonly acknowledged that money spent on infant mental health saves a great deal more money that would be spent working with the same child in adolescence, when the problems are much more complex and ingrained. This training will allow more therapists to pursue this exciting and booming career option.”

The school intends to make the training very affordable and more easily completed than other available trainings in this field. By making the program one of Southwestern’s core offerings, it will be available to a larger pool of students and professionals.

“By treating some trauma and attachment disorders early, we can help to ensure that children affected as infants can overcome these obstacles and lead rich, full lives as adults,” concludes Nolan. “In making these courses more accessible to professionals, we can ensure that more infants, parents, and caregivers can get help when they need it.”

Now in its 34th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
