Southwestern College has long been focused on ensuring that its continuing education opportunities are accessible to as many students and professionals as possible. Many of the special workshops and seminars the school offers can count for either class credits or continuing education credits (CECs), and every year the school holds the Transformation and Healing Conference. As part of this commitment to students, alumni and the professional community, the college is now proposing changes to its numerous certificate programs that would both reduce the cost and time commitment required, while still providing counselors and therapists with valuable training and credentials.“We decided that, over time, the certificate process has gotten long and expensive for many who would seek them,” says Dr. Jim Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “Our intention with these changes is to increase affordability and access for students and alumni.”
Among the proposed changes is splitting some larger certificate into smaller niches, and reducing the number of hours required for them across the board. The goal is to eliminate the 200 hour requirement so that busy professionals and students can more easily fit the classes into their schedule. The school is also looking to make the certificates more affordable by reducing the cost per CEC. The result would be more opportunities for relevant training with less money and time.
“While these changes must still be approved by the Higher Learning Commission, I am optimistic and excited,” concludes Nolan. “There may be some changes still to come, but we look forward to serving the continuing education needs of the community.”
