On July 18, 2014, a lawsuit was filed by Birmingham-based law firm Glenda Cochran Associates on behalf of a Huntsville mother and her two children for serious injuries sustained in the January 15, 2013 Lincoln Park housing development fire. The complaint names Huntsville Utilities and the Huntsville Housing Authority as defendants, and alleges that the natural gas leak which caused the explosion was the result of their negligence.Cheri Kent and her two children, ages 5 and 7, were sleeping at the time of the explosion. They escaped the blaze with the help of neighbors. Ms. Kent suffered severe burns over more than 50 percent of her body, and was initially taken to Huntsville Hospital before being transferred to University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Burn Center. The children also suffered burn injuries, and were treated at Children’s Hospital Burn Center.
Lincoln Park is located about a mile north of downtown Huntsville on Washington Street.
