Firstat Nursing Services, a San Diego Senior Care and home health and skilled nursing agency reveals ways to include senior citizens in family fun.

Linnea Goodrich, president of Firstat Nursing Services says, “It’s important for caregivers and all members of the family to ensure senior loved ones are included in activities, and that they get regular socialization weekly.”

Here are three ways to include senior citizens in family fun.

Set Up a Schedule for Weekly Visits – Even if there is only one person near enough to visit an elderly relative weekly, it is a big help in decreasing loneliness that often occurs when seniors are isolated. If no family members live within a reasonable distance, set up a home health care visit. Professional health care providers will stop in, and keep elderly clients physically and mentally active while checking on all aspects of health needs, including hygiene and nutrition.

Do More Than Invite Older Relatives – As people age, they may not be as capable of getting around as easily as they were even a few years earlier. While there is no set age when mobility becomes an issue, family members should keep an eye on older relatives, watching for signs that may prevent them from attending important family gatherings such as birthdays, anniversaries and holiday parties.

When seniors can no longer drive themselves, or have related mobility issues, do more than just invite them to parties, but arrange for transportation. If that is not possible, task someone who is capable to pick them up and bring them to the party. Many senior care providers offer assistance with travel, and can even arrange to help them get to and from airports.

Let Them Host the Party – While it is unreasonable to expect an elderly relative to do all of the work involved in hosting a party or family event, there are a many ways to bring the party to them. Arrange for family members to supply food or have others arrive early to help set up, allowing seniors to enjoy time with everyone and feel connected.

Keeping elderly loved ones mentally and emotionally fit requires regular interaction. Consider hosting weekly or monthly game nights, ice-cream parties, BBQs or music video parties. If family gatherings aren’t possible more than once a month, make sure elderly family members are getting the help they need on a daily or weekly basis by contacting a senior care provider.
