San Diego dentist, Chase Bennett, DDS, has successfully completed requirements for certification in Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Craniofacial Pain (ABCP).

Recognizing Dr. Bennett’s achievement, ABCP President, H. Clifton Simmons III, DDS, explained:

“The ABCP is committed to assisting the public by certifying dentists who successfully demonstrate their knowledge of the relationship between craniofacial pain and sleep-disordered breathing. Earning board-certification in Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine is an important professional achievement that signifies to patients plus dental, medical and other health professionals that the dentist has met the high standards of care set forth by the ABCP.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, 50-70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders. However, as many as 80% of patients who suffer from sleep disorders are believed to be undiagnosed. This puts them at significantly increased risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes plus workplace accidents and injuries.

The Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine certification program was created by the ABCP in recognition of the fact that a) Dental Sleep Medicine is encompassed within Craniofacial Pain practice and, b) dentists are important members of the sleep-disordered breathing patient care team. It is also consistent with scientific literature, which is increasingly documenting the co-existence of sleep-disordered breathing and TMJ disorders.

Dr. Bennett, who practices at the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of San Diego, is the youngest dentist ever to achieve Diplomate status in the American Board of Craniofacial Pain for the disciplines of Craniofacial Pain and Sleep Disordered Breathing.

Established in 1985 and headquartered in Reston, VA, the ABCP is an independent, nonprofit whose purpose is to conduct certification examinations in the field of Craniofacial Pain and its related disciplines. The ABCP adheres to the American Dental Association Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct, and advises all Diplomates to follow this code and their state or legal regulatory agency requirements when advertising their status.
