Many runners are plagued with chronic back pain, and some of these people decide to cease an active lifestyle in order to escape the pain. Unfortunately, this course of action can lead to a slow decline in health. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to a number of health concerns, including worsening back pain.

Dr. Frank Gomez from Sayville Chiropractic recently released a checklist of things runners can do to alleviate back pain. Dr. Gomez is a leading chiropractor with almost 20 years of clinical and research experience. He has worked with many runners who have incurred back pain, offering a tested list of things that help alleviate chronic and acute back pain.

Back Pain or Hip Pain

First, runners should always stretch before their regimen. When running, runners should wear appropriate running shoes with padded insoles and utilize a relaxed running posture in which they are leaning slightly forward. A proper gait, one that ensures that the feet are gliding and glancing, can also help prevent and stop back pain.

While there are many practices that can be utilized while running to decrease and stop back pain, there are a few things that runners can do outside of running that will help. For instance, Dr. Gomez recommends that runners take up an intensive core strengthening regimen. A strong core ensure that the back has plenty of proper support from the abdominal muscles.

Dr. Gomez has also busted a common misconception. “Flat feet are a common thing, and there’s no reason to stop running if you have flat feet. We offer foot orthotics that make it possible for someone with flat feet to run without problems,” said Dr. Gomez.
