Attorney Rocky McElhaney has been honored by the Department of Defense Office of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) with a Patriot Award for his continuous support and care for employees who serve in the National Guard or who are Reservists, or whose spouses are in the Guard or Reserve. The award was presented by Martin Plumlee of the ESGR.“I can’t begin to tell you what this means to me,” said firm founder and award winner Rocky McElhaney. “There are three people in my office who are either service members or whose spouses have served – including my own strong and incredible wife, Penny. When duty calls and servicemen and women need to leave, I know that for their spouses meeting the demands of the typical 8-5 schedule can be challenging especially when there are little ones at home.” With Paralegal, Jillian Hester, whose husband serves in the SE-MARSG medical command of Nashville, Rocky implemented a more flexible schedule that gave her more time to get across town to pick up her 4 year old son and freedom to make up time when it worked best for her. “When I found out that our Jillian and her husband nominated me for this honor- I was truly touched, I didn’t think that I was doing anything out of the ordinary. After all our servicemen and women sacrifice, being accommodating to our employees whose spouses are serving our country is just the right thing to do,” says McElhaney.

About the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve’s Patriot Award
According to the ESGR website, the Patriot Award is one in a series of accommodations designed to thank an employer for his or her continuous dedication to employees who serve in the Reserves or the Guard. “The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.” The award series was started in an effort by the Department of Defense to recognize the crucial role civilians play in “assist[ing] in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's military commitment.”
The ESGR was founded in 1972, and relies on the support of more than 4,700 volunteers across the country and throughout U.S. territories.
