Retailer Urges Consumers to Shop Sustainably This Year

An eco-friendly retailer reminds consumers to be sustainable this year as they shop for holiday gifts.

According to the National Retail Federation, US consumers are expected to spend 3.6 percent more this year during the Christmas shopping season, which amounts to almost $656 billion in total sales. And online sales are also expected to increase between 7 and 10 percent, amounting to about $177 billion. But one retailer says consumers can make a huge difference in the environment by making only a few changes in their shopping habits this year.

“All this consumerism is great for the economy, but unless it’s done right, it can have dire consequences for the environment.” says a spokesman from MJH Innovations, a company that sells quality products at reasonable prices, including many eco-friendly products. “That’s why we’re urging people to consider making a few changes as they shop this year.”

Specifically, he’s urging consumers to not accept disposable plastic bags or paper bags at the register, and instead take their own reusable shopping bags with them as they visit their local stores. “If everyone in the country took their own shopping bags while Christmas shopping this year, it would prevent millions of bags from entering the environment and doing harm to the planet and marine animals.”

He’s worried about the devastating effect plastic pollution is having on the environment. Experts agree that if people don’t change their habits, the plastic trash pile in the ocean will continue to grow, marine animals and sea birds will continue to die by the millions from ingesting the bags, and many other negative effects on the earth.

“It’s a simple matter of carrying reusable shopping when holiday shopping, and then buying sustainable, earth-friendly gifts, such as those made from bamboo,” he says.
