Consumers are parking their cars and taking to their bicycles in record numbers in order to reduce their environmental footprint and avoid the high cost of gas, but according to one retailer, they need to take some specific safety precautions in order to avoid an injury or even death.
“There are numerous studies showing the most likely place a cyclist will get killed while riding, and others that show the time of day most of these fatalities happen,” says a spokesman from MJH Innovations, a retailer that sells high quality products at reasonable prices, like the LED flashlight he recommends for biker riders. “For example, one study shows that 66 percent of bike fatalities happen in urban areas, and 30 percent of bike fatalities occur between 5 pm and 9 pm. In other words, many of these cyclist deaths happen as the sun begins to set and into the nighttime hours.”
Other studies show that 36 percent of all cycling deaths happen during June, July, and August, as people are out enjoying night rides in warmer weather.
“I want to stress the importance of using a quality LED flashlight on the bike’s handlebars when riding,” he says. “Doing that one thing can greatly reduce a rider’s chance of an accident because motorists will be better able to see them.”
He recommends that cyclists carry two flashlights in case the batteries die in one, or it’s lost. “You should always have a backup because if you’re caught without a flashlight for whatever reason, it will put your at risk of an accident.”
He says that cyclists should always look to purchase an LED flashlight that comes with a handlebar mount to make attaching it to their bike easy. “Let’s face it,” he says. “No one wants to ride their bike while holding a flashlight in one hand. It just makes sense to attach it to the bike so riders can use their hands to steer.”
As spring approaches, many cyclists are gearing up to begin riding again, and if they’re going to do it at night, they should ensure they use a bike mounted flashlight to help keep them safe.
