The site has templates anyone can use as a base to create a unique resume design, but the documents can also be used as they are. The site leaves it up to each individual whether they want to redesign them or just enter their own information and start sending out applications. Those who have not yet upgraded their Word Software to the latest version will embrace the inclusion of doc templates. The site has plenty of .doc templates that work with all older versions of Microsoft Word, as well as the most recent docx format introduced in 2010, which is still the default format in the 2013 edition.

Director Andrew Burg described the new website like this:

“The scary truth is that job seekers can ruin their chances before they have applied for a single job. Selecting the wrong resume template will decrease the chances of getting an interview and unfortunately add months to a job search. Most job seekers will probably not welcome a few extra months of unemployment. This is what we want to remedy with our site. We are committed to making continual improvements and adjustments so that everyone can improve their job search results. It is the goal of Resume Templates to become the leading resource for reliable information about the template selection.”

The resume layout samples featured on the site are available for all job levels. Some will help the graduating college student with an entry-level application, whereas others will be relevant for the seasoned professional or manager getting to the next level in their careers. The sheer amount of templates available ensures that any job seeker will find a template that fits their needs. The site has worked hard to make sure that the list includes templates that will work for the most common professions found in for example Marketing, Sales, IT, Customer Service, Operations and Development.

In 2012 TheLadders introduced an eye-tracking study focused on the recruiting behavior of key decision makers. The study found that recruiters on average spend 6 seconds on an individual resume. This was put in contrast to recruiters’ self reports suggesting they spend 4-5 minutes reading each resume.

Resume design and layout was one of the primary problems. The wrong design could make the resume useless to a recruiter. It found that making it easier for the recruiter to read and find certain pieces of information increased usability by 60%. The study also revealed that resumes with less information were seen as clearer and were preferred by recruiters. The approval rating would increase with as much as 40% if the resume was pruned and contained the right information.

Adding too much information into a resume template will decrease the job seeker’s chance of getting invited to an interview. The design of the template hereby plays a bigger part than what researchers thought before.

The developers of the Resume Templates website have spent a lot of time aggregating the available resources today. Additional updates and new features can be expected in the future. The Site welcomes new and old website visitors alike to take a look at the resume examples available, and to submit feedback for the next round of updates.
