Residents Across the Nation are Fighting Drug Rehab Centers in Their Neighborhoods

As the need for drug rehabs increase, local residents are putting up a fight when they propose to build rehab centers in their neighborhoods

In just the latest of the brewing battles over proposed drug rehabs, residents of Frederick, MD are opposing a plan that would turn a former presidential retreat into a drug rehab. The rehabilitation center, which is affiliated with the Church of Scientology, would cater to addicts who have an addiction to narcotics. The church official say that the center would purely be a rebab and not be church related. The real estate arm of the church is petitioning to have the 40 acre property designated as a historical one since it was used by Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower. The designation would allow them to make the necessary changes to it to prepare for a rehab center.

That isn’t the only community to be up in arms over a proposed neighborhood rehab center. Residents of Jeddo in Luzerne County are furiously fighting a proposed rehab center in their neighborhood that would treat people with drug and alcohol addictions. One resident is quoted as saying, “We don’t know who these people are and we would live in constant fear.” This is despite the assurances of a developer of the center who says they will be selective about who they take in and will not accept anyone with a history of legal trouble, or anyone who has been ordered by the court system to receive therapy. But resident are turning a deaf ear to the promises and continue to fight against the center.

Residents of Saginaw, Texas are putting up a similar fight as Med Mart, a rehab center that helps clients with pain medication and narcotic addictions, is trying to build a rehab there. Residents are concerned because the rehab would be based out of a shopping center strip, and is close to a daycare center.

Even the high priced rehab clients are taking heat as residents of Malibu say they have had enough of the expensive spa-like rehabs cater to the wealthy and celebrities. They say they are sick of the noise, traffic and safety issues. One resident is quoted as saying, “We are going to take our city back.”

A spokesman from Counseling for a Better Life Therapy and Treatment Centers says that until residents understand that addicts simply need a safe place to overcome their addictions, and that they are not a threat to society while undergoing treatment, it will be more and more difficult to find a rehab treatment center where they can receive that help.

Meanwhile, residents all over the country are banning together and fighting the very centers that would provide compassionate care to addicts and help them get on the road to recovery.
