Researchers Discover New Treatment Method for Gastric Cancer

Researchers have discovered an exciting new treatment with the ability to reduce a persons chance of developing gastric cancer. Learn more here.

In a newly completed study, researchers discovered that a combined course of therapy helped to kill off the H. pylori strain of bacteria known to cause stomach ulcers, which in turn reduces the likelihood of a patient developing gastric cancer. The course of therapy involves the simultaneous use of an antibiotic and an anti-acid used to suppress production of gastric acid.

Though over two-thirds of the world’s population has the bacteria known to cause gastric ulcers in their body, many don’t experience any discomfort. However, those that do usually suffer from extreme discomfort and distress. In the evaluation performed by these researchers, they found that a 2 week treatment with antibiotic and gastric acid suppressant significantly reduced the likelihood that the subject would develop cancer.

Study co-author Dr. Paul Moayyedi, a professor of medicine of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, was quoted in a statement, saying:

“The findings of this systematic review add to the increasing evidence that eradicating H. pylori in the general population has the potential to prevent gastric cancer. We feel our review provides sufficient evidence for countries with high gastric cancer rates to consider population H. pyloritesting and treating. More research is needed on the extent of this effect and on any potential harms of H. pylori treatment, so any country starting screening should do pilot projects to obtain more information on these issues.”

This new discovery comes at the heels of yet another breakthrough that exposed the method by which fuel is delivered to cancer cells. Nanette Louis, a representative for a popular health company, was thrilled to hear the news of yet another development. She said “If science continues to progress at this rate, it won’t be long before a cure for this deadly disease is discovered. To this community, developments like this are considered a win – and a step in the right direction for finally figuring out what cancer really is and how to stop or prevent it.”
