Proposed EPA Regulations Take Effect in 2015: Wood Burning Stoves and Fireplaces Targeted

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations tighten wood-burning emissions, but The Fireplace Place has options for consumers.

“Fortunately, current technology provides for fireplace units that are EPA approved,” states Klayton Tapley, CEO of The Fireplace Place. “In fact, retrofitting an existing wood burning fireplace with a new insert can exceed EPA regulations.”

In a January 3, 2014 article, “EPA moves to regulate new wood stoves,” Washington Post reporter, Lenny Bernstein, explains that the EPA’s proposed regulation, “would require manufacturers of wood stoves, wood-pellet stoves, forced-air wood furnaces, wood boilers, fireplace inserts and masonry heaters to build a generation of devices that burn 80 percent more cleanly than current models.”

The regulation restrictions would affect over 85,000 wood burning stoves and fireplaces estimated to be sold in 2015. Bernstein reassures existing owners that, “The new rules do not apply to wood heaters already in use or to residential fireplaces, backyard fire containers or fire pits used by campers and beachgoers. Nor do they apply to smokers, wood-fired barbecues or pizza ovens.”

Tapley continues, “Due to modern designs with the built-in re-burn systems, today's wood burning inserts can produce burn times of up to 14 hours. Think about that! That is only 2 loads of wood per day versus every 45 minutes in an open fireplace. A secondary benefit of the re-burn system is lowered emissions. Open fireplaces or non-EPA approved stoves emit up to 80 grams of harmful emissions per hour into the ozone system. By using a modern EPA approved wood insert, we can lower these harmful emissions to as low as 0.58 grams per hour.”
