Joey Lunsford accepts new students and combines classical technique with popular music to keep students engaged.

Statistics from the public education sector indicate students who participate in music lessons achieve higher scores on standardized tests, particularly in the areas English and Mathematics, than students with no musical background. Those with access to quality music education exhibited an average 22 percent increase in English scores and 20 percent in Math with improvements in Science scores as well. In addition to the academic benefits of musical training, children and teens who are engaged in music lessons tend to be less likely to engage in negative activities including drugs and alcohol and present significantly less behavioral problems than those who are not.

Extensive research on this topic indicates the reasons behind these facts stem from the challenges brought about by learning to read music and associate that skill to the instrument of interest. The ability to play an instrument commands precise timing and dexterity, requiring students to use both perception and creativity in a different manner than necessary in scholastic learning. No stranger to the numerous benefits of musical training, piano instructor Joey Lunsford has announced he is now taking on new students for piano lessons in Brooklyn, New York.

Lunsford confirmed, "Since moving to Brooklyn in 1999, I have taught hundreds of students in the Park Slope area. Most of my students are aged K-12, but I teach older students as well. My main objective is to instill into young minds a love and appreciation of music that will last a lifetime. So many students start piano lessons only to drift away within a year or two, so I feel that my primary goal must be to keep the student genuinely interested, and that interest can only be generated and maintained with a wide spectrum of music styles that keep the lessons challenging and fun."

Lessons taught by Lunsford are based on a syllabus that combines traditional skills and techniques with improvisation that keeps the students engaged. His training begins with John Thompson's Teaching Little Fingers to Play, which instills the basic sight reading skills necessary for playing music of all genres. Pieces from Schaum, Faber, Bastien and other classical composers will be incorporated for development of technical ability. Lunsford revealed his love of the Blues, explaining he incorporates that musical style into his teachings, as well as Jazz, Rock and Pop.

Lunsford's private piano lessons are affordably priced and offered to students in their own home. He is willing to teach students in his home studio but feels providing students piano lessons in brooklyn NY in their own homes is more convenient for their parents and offers them a more comfortable learning environment. He noted several of his former students are currently continuing their musical education at the LaGuardia High School of Music and Art in Manhattan.

Concluded Lunsford, "A quality teacher/student relationship instills confidence and introduces an understanding of disciplined habits that will reflect in all areas of development."
