Pellet Stoves Grow in Popularity

Pellet stoves grow in popularity as an economic, low emission solution that reduces heating costs and adds ambiance to homes. One in three wood burning stoves sold in the United States is a pellet stove.

“For a technology that was only invented in 1980s, [pellet stoves] are a remarkable innovation success story,” explains The Alliance for Green Heat in its March 2013 article in Biomass Magazine. “Today, for every three stoves sold, two use cordwood and one uses pellets.”

A pellet stove burns compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat. By slowly feeding fuel from a hopper into a burn-pot area, they create a constant flame that requires little to no physical adjustments.

The key to purchasing pellet fuel is to buy only pellets comprised of 100% hardwood.  Be aware: Many big box stores will sell soft wood pellets that cause inferior burn times and may be problematic for the stove.

“Too often Big-Box Store’s advice, products, or services sound good at the moment, but they just don’t work at home,” states Dawn Tapley,Regional Sales Representative for The Fireplace Place in Atlanta, Georgia. “When thinking about adding or upgrading to a pellet stove, customers need three things: information, options, and experience.”

“Functionality is always considered first,” Dawn clarifies.  “A pellet stove is great--as long as it is optimized for the space it needs to heat and meets the necessary emissions standards for your community.”

With current technology, meeting or exceeding EPA regulations is easy. The Alliance for Green Heat discloses, “The average pellet stove emits under 2 grams of particulates an hour.  [Proposed EPA regulations] require pellet stoves to emit under 4.5 grams per hour.”

“A quality pellet insert can range from $2500 to $5500.  The prices are directly related to the heat capacity, design, options, and manufacturer.” Dawn concludes, “A free consultation will determine the best pellet stove for the best price; doing some upfront work will ultimately provide years of comfortable, affordable, and safe heat.”
