Capital Oral & Facial Surgery Center Sponsors OCF 5K Walk/Run to Raise Awareness of Oral Cancer

The 4th annual Oral Cancer Foundation 5K Walk/Run for Awareness in honor of Peter McGee Hoffman was recently held in Silver Spring, MD, successfully raising more than $61,000 to help achieve Peter’s goals of spreading awareness, and raising critical funds towards the fight to end oral cancer.

Peter McGee Hoffman was a healthy, and active 23-year-old when he was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2008, and passed away just 7 short months later at the age of 24. During treatment, Peter began planning a fundraising 5K in order to raise awareness of oral cancer. Inspired by Peter's kindness, generosity, sense of adventure and incredible strength he showed through his treatment, his friends and family have continued to organize 5K events in order to continue Peter’s vision.

The Capital Oral & Facial Surgery Center knows the importance for awareness of oral cancer, regularly caring for patients coming to their office in Washington DC who are referred by general dentists trusting Dr. Virginia Lee in the proper diagnosis and identification of oral cancer and oral pathology. Dr. Lee has also been a proponent of self-examination, stating on her website: “We would recommend performing an oral cancer self-examination monthly...do not ignore suspicious lumps or sores.”, and prompts anyone with reddish or whitish patches in the mouth, sores in the mouth that don’t heal and bleed readily, lumps or thickening on the skin lining inside the mouth, chronic sore throat or hoarseness, and difficulty in chewing or swallowing to contact their office.

The Oral Cancer Foundation has reported on the rates of oral cancer on their website, and notes that the historically high death rate associated with this cancer is due to the fact that it is routinely discovered late in development, giving even more credence to self-examination and routine visits to a physician or dentist for oral cancer screenings in an effort to catch the disease early in it’s progression.

The sponsorship from Capital Oral & Facial Surgery, and donations to the Oral Cancer Foundation and the Peter McGee Hoffman Memorial Fund enable the OCF to “respond more rapidly to new ideas in the battle against oral cancer.” The donations go towards funding research, raising awareness, as well as early detection.

The Capital Oral & Facial Surgery Center is currently offering a special for new patients, and can be reached at 202.296.6600. They are located at 1145 19th St. NW #777 in Washington, DC.
