“Google rankings are based on a proprietary ranking algorithm that both rewards and penalizes web sites,” she adds. “Over the years, Google has streamlined and refined its algorithm; three of the most notable updates have been dubbed Panda, Penguin, and, most recently, Hummingbird. Brands that use Google-friendly online marketing strategies have a much better chance at making their web sites more discoverable than those that do not.”
First released in 2011, Google Panda penalizes sites that use low-quality or duplicate content and contain a number of ads, while at the same time rewarding sites that use original, relevant content that is free of grammatical and spelling errors. Google Penguin was released in 2012 and penalizes sites that use unethical SEO techniques, including keyword stuffing, paid links, and backlinking patterns, and rewarding those web sites that provide genuine value.
“In late September, Google unveiled its Hummingbird algorithm update. Instead of penalizing a web site, Hummingbird works toward improving search results, and rather than relying so much on keywords, it takes things like syntax and word order into consideration,” Toth concludes. “Google rankings are based more on answering the actual search query than just matching keywords, so this will make it easier for smaller businesses to connect with qualified customers.”
