A newly published study helped to finally establish a clear link between statin drugs for cholesterol and an increased risk for developing diabetes. Review this report to learn more about these findings.

Pulmin released their free report today highlighting the findings of a ground-breaking study published by researchers at VA North Texas Health System and the University of Texas Southwestern, which established a strong link between statin drugs and an increased risk for developing diabetes. While this connection was assumed for a while, this study is the first of its kind establish a clear relationship between statin drugs and an increased risk of developing diabetes.

By using propensity score matching, a very direct method of data comparison, researchers examined medical records for over 3,000 people who met similar criteria. They found that, when compared to the people who were not using statin drugs, those taking these drugs were more likely to develop diabetes. Overall, this analysis found that statin users were over 100 times more likely to be diagnosed with this life-threatening disease than non-users.

One of the principal researchers, Ishak Mansi, was quoted saying “In our study, statin use was associated with a significantly higher risk of new-onset diabetes, even in a very healthy population. The risk of diabetes with statins has been known, but up until now it was thought that this might be due to the fact that people who were prescribed statins had greater medical risks to begin with.”

The results of this study reiterate the importance of lifestyle changes and natural alternatives, and further illustrates why prescription drugs should be used as a last resort. Mansi said “Knowing the risks may motivate a patient to quit smoking, rather than swallow a tablet, or to lose weight and exercise. Ideally, it is better to make those lifestyle changes and avoid taking statins if possible.”
