The salt of which the lamps are formed have a pleasing calming appearance and put out a calming amber light when illuminated. Due to the hygroscopic nature of Himalayan salt (draws water from the air), the salt lamps release negative ions into the household environment when water molecules are attracted to the salt and then released back into the air by evaporation from the warm salt. This works only while the salt is warmed by the internal light bulb.
A preponderance of negative ions in the air has been shown to have numerous positive environmental effects.
