John Carlson, a New Jersey-based magician, has launched a new Stranger Danger Magic Show routine for children. Carlson, a child advocate and former police officer, cleverly ties jokes, slapstick and magical tricks in with puppetry and a strong stranger danger messages to educate children. Firstly, Carlson gets children laughing, and then when he has their attention he educates them on how to stay safe when away from home.

Carlson’s new routine launched in February 2017, travels across the states visiting children. As such, the Stranger Danger Magic Show visits child-care centers, pre-schools and elementary schools. Performances typically cater to small groups of up to 50 children, although Carlson has performed for larger audiences.
Using disappearing handkerchiefs, balloon tricks and ventriloquism, Carlson makes children laugh and ignites their imagination. Once he has their attention, then he introduces them to lovable characters such as the bird and the bunny, which magically appear out of thin air, before teaching children how to identify and avoid strangers and when to call 911.
When the performance begins to wind-up, Carlson’s sidekick, a puppet, then helps him to recap the important messages of the show. Carlson and his characters leave a lasting impression that is fun-filled and memorable.
As a retired New York police officer of 20-years, Carlson turned his part-time career as a magician into a full-time educational role. Carlson, a father of three, believes children are one of his hardest acts because they see things that adults don’t.
When asked about his show, Carlson said, “You have to make kids laugh to grab their attention. When I have that at certain points in the show, then BOOM, I hit them with the message.”
