Aftercare-specific IOP brings new skills building opportunities to recovering addicts in the Triad

Full Life Counseling & Recovery has received licensure from the NC Division of Healthcare Regulation for their Intensive Outpatient Program. Clinical Director, Ginny Mills explains that “The Full Life intensive outpatient program was developed to offer an aftercare-specific program that strengthens knowledge and skills in recovery and helps develop distress tolerance, relapse prevention and mindfulness skills to improve outcomes for sustainable, long-term recovery.”

IOP clients at Full Life receive weekly individual therapy in addition to 3 nights of recovery group counseling sessions over a 12-week period. Group content focuses on Gorski-model relapse prevention, Rehab Review to refresh understanding and knowledge about selective topics worth repeating, mindfulness skills, dialectical behavior therapy skills, recovery journaling, and process group. A multi-family group helps clients’ family members continue their involvement in the recovery process for the whole family. IOP graduates may elect to continue to participate in group free of charge or, if appropriate, transition to a professionals’ relapse prevention group that meets once a week.

“We recognize that the recovery journey is best sustained through a combination of high-quality primary treatment, community-based recovery support, high-quality aftercare, family engagement in the recovery experience and collaboration between providers of counseling, psychiatric care and primary healthcare — especially for the first 18 months of recovery. Such recovery-oriented systems of care improve outcomes, heal spirits and strengthen families,” Mills added.

In 2011, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 23.5 million Americans over the age of 12 needed treatment for alcohol or drug abuse problems. Of those, a mere 11.2 percent sought treatment. In August, the residents of High Point witnessed 25 overdoses from heroin in just 16 short days (WFMY.) The staff at Full Life Counseling saw the abundance of clients who needed comprehensive support in the Triad and acted by creating their new Intensive Outpatient Program. Their hope is that clients will build a strong support system for themselves and pair that with tangible skills for maintaining an abundant life in recovery from addiction.
