Lavario, one of the world’s largest providers of self-help programs against addictions, has released an addiction infographic with the eight most common addictions in the English-speaking countries worldwide. Eating addiction, particularly binge eating, is the most widespread addiction with more than 8 million people suffering from it. Alcohol addiction ranks second and dope third. The World Health Organization WHO has recently published a report on the correlation between higher alcohol consumption and lower life expectancy.The infographic shows that several non-substance addictions have made it to the top 8 of addictions. Internet addictions, adult movies, gambling and shopping addictions affect 9 million people in the English speaking countries. With the rise of the internet, social media, online shopping and online gambling all of these addictions have risen overproportionally during the last ten years. Governments have limited possibilities to stop the rise of these problems as most web sites are available world-wide and most of the content is not illegal.
Lavario points out that smoking and the abuse of pharmaceuticals are very widespread addictions as well. However, scientist neither agree on the number of addicts nor on the criteria when to classify somebody as an addict. When people suffer from addictions, they should look for help.
