New Economic Data Shows Engineering Job Growth Helping to Reduce The Unemployment Rate

Prominent information technology (IT) and engineering staffing association tracks steady job growth for domestic IT and engineering industries. Recent economic trends are encouraging and are helping to reduce the unemployment rate.

Despite the continued sluggish economy, new economic data shows that job growth in the engineering and technical disciplines is helping to reduce the Nation's unemployment rate. This is good news for the unemployed. Skilled workers in many United States industries have been increasingly frustrated by the sluggish economy, persistently uncomfortable levels of unemployment and high rates of underemployment.

However, this does not seem to be the case for those who are trained to work in IT or other engineering disciplines. According to IT and engineering staffing experts at TechServe Alliance, jobs in the IT service sector grew by 3.1 percent since the end of 2013 which represents 139,400 new positions. The association's trend data projects that the climb will continue into 2015 for those individuals who are prepared with the right skill sets, experience and training credentials.

The job growth success in the IT service sector is followed closely by new employment opportunities for those working in various engineering disciplines. This sector has added over 52,000 new engineering positions to the nation's job market since 2013 which equates to a percentage growth rate of 2.1 percent. This growth has helped to significantly reduce the Nation's unemployment rate.

TechServe Alliance's CEO Mark Roberts remarked "that the recent numbers for each sector is part of an overarching historical trend." He stated, "With December's [2013] positive numbers, we have now had 57 consecutive months of IT growth which is an impressive statistic to be sure." A complete set of TechServe Alliance employment indices for January 2015 can be found on the organization's website.

The engineering job market in the Boston area mirror the TechServe findings. TRIAD Engineering Corp, located in Burlington, Massachusetts is a technical staffing agency focused on staffing solutions for the engineering marketplace and has confirmed similar trends. “Over the past few months demand for contract engineering staff among our clients has increased." says TRIAD President Kristen Roper. "This includes local firms seeking to bring on technical talent through a contract-to-direct arrangement.” she continues. Ms. Roper has recently written an article about this entitled “Staffing Employment on the Rise” which can be found on their website: http://triad-eng.com

The statistics gathered by TechServe Alliance's data analysts echo recent success stories reported by USA Today. According to their reports, numerous high paying engineering jobs are available in the United States for those who have the right training and who know where to locate these desired positions. The USA Today story featured a young man of 21 years of age who commanded a six figure salary in 2014 with Chevron Phillip's petrochemical plant in Houston, TX. This remarkable report also highlights the versatility within the IT and engineering sectors.

No longer is an advanced degree or even a four year degree needed to perform the technical requirements of positions similar to the one this young man holds in the manufacturing process division of the Houston plant. The 21 year old opted for a two year community college degree that gave him adequate training for the well compensated position in Chevron's manufacturing division.

The technical skills required for positions like the one at the Chevron Phillips petrochemical plant is what the industry calls "middle skills." Advancements in IT have changed the way that nearly all goods are developed and produced; the modern counterparts to legacy assembly line workers have acquired the middle skills to keep pace with the technical changes within their industry.

Changing technology trends, the use of "middle skills", and a slowly improving economy all contribute to job growth in the engineering sectors as well as improvement in the unemployment rate. Perhaps this is a model to be emulated for other sluggish sectors of the economy?
