NBA's Rudy Gay In Last Season As A King

NBA small forward, Rudy Gay is likely to play his last games for the Sacramento Kings in the 2016/2017 season. Gay plans to opt out of his contract at the end of the season to become an unrestricted free agent, with expectations of a trade.

As the 2016/2017 NBA training camps begin, Sacramento Kings' small forward, Rudy Gay, is open with management about his intentions to opt out of his contract at the end of the season. As an unrestricted free agent, Gay is likely to be on the trading block.

“I made the decision to opt out,” Gay said on September 26th during the team’s media day. “Whether I sign here, whether I’m here the rest of the season or whether I start here, it’s really not up to me. Wherever I am, I’m going play to the best of my ability.”

Playing injured through last season, Gay saw a drop in production, his per game point average dropping to only 17.2. He attributes the struggles to a nagging Achilles injury that has been rehabilitated in the offseason.

“I’m pain-free,” Gay told the Sacramento Bee. “I’m in the best shape of my life, I’d like to say, and I’m focused. No matter what, I come here to play with my brothers, and that’s everybody in that locker room, and we’re playing to win.”

The offseason brought Gay to Miami, FL to train under professional athlete trainer, Manning Sumner of Legacy Fit. Known for his ability to assist in injury rehabilitation, Sumner's resume is like the who's who of the NBA. Instrumental in the comeback of Golden State Warrior, Shawn Livingston from a near career ending leg injury, Sumner seemed the perfect choice for Gay.

“I train many pro athletes who have struggled with injury,” Sumner stated. “When Rudy contacted me, after having some procedures and rehab on his Achilles, he was ready to build himself back up and knew that I could help him get past the injury and into game shape.”

A former collegiate athlete, Sumner is no stranger to sport related injuries and the struggles athletes have getting past them.

“These guys want to play,” the trainer explained. “And those who can will play injured without realizing the potential damage to their bodies. Rudy is that kind of guy. He was out there busting his tail while he was in pain.”

According to CBS Sports, interest in Gay is coming from top NBA teams across the country. Following his stint in Miami during the offseason, his character and conditioning got the attention of the Miami Heat, and also looking at the 30-year old forward for potential trade negotiations are the Houston Rockets.

“His contract is through this season,” commented Sumner. “And he is ready to play, either for Sacramento or any NBA team that sees his potential. He's strong and healthy and ready.”

Gay reported to the Kings' training camp on September 27th with intentions of giving his all to the Sacramento team despite becoming a free agent soon. The small forward told the Sacramento Bee that conversations with Sacramento General Manager, Vlade Divac, have been good of late.

“We’re talking, and everything is pretty much how it needs to be,” Gay said.
