Getting in the good graces of Google’s search engine rankings will increasingly rely on having a mobile-friendly website.

SEO agency Switch Lead is cautioning businesses that not optimizing their website for mobile devices is a risk they don’t want to take.

Mobile optimization focuses on making sure visitors accessing websites from mobile devices have an experience optimized for the device. It considers factors like the site’s design, structure and page speed that could turn mobile users away if it’s not optimized.

Google began using mobile-friendliness as a page-by-page ranking signal on mobile searches in 2015, boosting the mobile search ranking of mobile-optimized websites. Google’s 2016 update increased the effect of the ranking signal.

“Getting good, relevant answers when you search shouldn’t depend on what device you’re using,” software engineer KiemenKloboves stated in Google’s Webmaster Central Blog. “You should get the best answer possible, whether you’re on a phone, desktop or tablet.”

Google has recently released another update. The most recent update targets pages with non-needed pop-up ads that cover up content and require users to close the ad so they can see the content. These ads can be especially frustrating to mobile device users.

The bottom line is having a mobile-optimized website will boost a site’s search engine ranking and ignoring the importance of mobile optimization may drop it. Why is Google making these changes?

A Pew Research Center survey shows that 95 percent of Americans now own a cellphone, including 77 percent who own a smartphone. That’s up from 35 percent when Pew conducted its first survey of smartphone ownership in 2011.

More people are searching on mobile phones than computers. Not having a mobile-friendly site makes it five times more likely that people will leave the site.

Google’s paying attention to these trends, and the changes aren’t done yet as mobile-first becomes an increasingly important term. Google has announced that at some time it will primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank the site’s pages.

Switch Lead advises businesses that, if they haven’t yet, now is the time to make that switch.
