Shave ice is one of the favorite desserts among both locals and tourists in Hawaii. The cool dessert is made by shaving a block of ice, placing the resulting shaved ice in a paper or plastic cone, and adding different-flavored syrup on top.
There are many shave ice producers and retailers throughout the islands of Hawaii. However, many of them use lesser quality ice shaving machines, thereby producing course ice which does not absorb the syrup properly. The resulting shave ice is not completely flavored and requires a straw for proper syrup consumption.
Born and raised on Oahu, Ululani Yamashiro began making shave ice in 2003 after a move to the Pacific Northwest. After five years of shave ice experience, Ululani, her husband David, and Brad Edgerton (longtime friend and now partner) decided to open their first shave ice shop in Lahaina, Maui.
Since 2008, the family run business has become an icon and is now widely recognized as industry experts and producers of a world class shave ice product. They have created flavors with their own recipes utilizing the finest ingredients including Purified water, pure cane sugar, premium purees, time-tested concentrates, local fruits and gourmet add-ons from renown Maui vendors whenever possible.
Ululani’s shave ice shops also offer different combinations of flavors, from the refreshing Ka’anapali (grape, lime and cherry) to the exotic Local Motion (mango, li hing mui and pineapple, topped with li hing mui powder).
