Mark White Fine Art adds new bronze sculptor JD Hansen to their gallery.

Mark White Galleries announces the newest addition to their roster, sculptor jd Hansen. Hansen’s works in bronze will grace the gallery with their soul-piercing presence. The California-based artist believes in the power of subtlety, saying, “A certain tilt to the head or drop of the shoulder reveals if the subject is at peace or in turmoil. I strive to cover the gamut of human existence in a snippet of space and time.” Each of Hansen’s works is born from a solid initial concept, a deeply personal blueprint of writing rather than diagrammatic form. Through a great deal of writing and often by the catalyst of music, Hansen brings her concepts to life in three-dimensional form – always with the goal of bringing forth truth. She says, “It doesn’t have to be pretty, but it has to be true.”

As Hansen refines each sculpture, she gradually strips away all that is unnecessary – until only the essence of the subject remains. She removes all obstructions until the subject’s primitive nature shines through and speaks just loudly enough for the viewer to understand. “The work doesn’t scream to get its message across. It is a hand placed lightly on the shoulder, giving a gentle nudge to invite the viewer to see. It is with a calm and settled mind that the viewer can hear the haunting melodies,” says Hansen. The pieces are formed in hot wax over metal armature, and then cast in bronze.

Hansen cloaks her works in a visually welcoming façade, bringing the viewer in close enough to see the darker hints of the subjects’ messages. “These undercurrents of darkness are visible beneath the aesthetically approachable exteriors; the smooth texture giving way to the melted roughness, the dignified posture giving way to a mournful turn; the warm bronze hue giving way to the cold, resistant tension of bronze,” says the artist. Although Hansen is not concerned with depicting obvious beauty, there is great beauty in truth, and truth lasts much longer than fleeting, superficial beauty – the kind world so easily gravitates to.

JD Hansen has a BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She graduated with distinction in Bronze foundry and metalworking classes. Hansen has been the subject of many articles, including a profile in Southwest Art Magazine, and has been the recipient of many awards, including the Museum Choice Award from the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut. Hansen was also recently featured in Sculpture Magazine. Her exhibition history is extensive and growing.
