It's rare for a company to abandon efficiency measures. Focus on efficiency is supposed to be how one stays in business. But that's exactly what Mound Laser and Photonics Center, or MLPC, did when they adopted Dr. Lisa Lang's job shop scheduling system called Velocity Scheduling. Materials Planner Danny Elsas didn't foresee the improvement in profitability, cash flow, quality and global competitiveness that followed. In fact, one might say that he and his team were skeptical of halting their focus on efficiency and instead, focusing on flow.

Velocity Scheduling System (VSS), based on the Theory of Constraints, is a manual, visual scheduling system that helps job shops like MLPC focuses on flow. Efficiency is thrown out. The system includes flow metrics, a visual planning board, and a visual scheduling board. VSS, which creates ongoing improvement, has helped Mound Laser and Photonics Center successfully mitigate a larger number of issues than prior to Velocity Scheduling System's implementation. The Kettering, Ohio company has seen major progress in overall performance.

MLPC Materials Planner Danny Elsas has gone from feeling the program couldn't work to seeing peak productivity within the company. His team works more proactively than ever to mitigate problems, reduce downtime, and facilitate smooth client transactions. Further elaborating on the traditional way his team handled a snag in the process versus the changes brought by the Velocity Scheduling System, Elsas said, “It took a half hour to find everybody, and then we're down trying to fix it. Now, I don't have to worry. A request gets put in for an engineer to look at it while it's on the To Be Kitted board, and then everybody knows all the revisions are correct before the job is released.”

Regarding MLPC's overall improvement since implementing the Velocity Scheduling System, Elsas stated, “Now we can ship out more production per week and get consistent cash flow. We can control scrap, too. We have less of it because we can catch problems early.”
