A Kansas Drug Lawyer website is asking parents to observe Red Ribbon Week alongside their children. The event takes place at the end of October every year and provides an opportunity for open dialogue between parents and their children. Through education and pledges to live a drug-free life, the event’s sponsors and the DEA believe drug use can be prevented overall.

National Family Partnership (NFP), the group that sponsors Red Ribbon Week, reports that drug use can be curbed by 42-percent when parents talk to their kids about drugs on a regular basis. However, only one-fourth of parents do, which is why the group works hard to integrate family awareness into the programs. Generally deployed at a grade-school level, Red Ribbon Week is observed by an 80 million people every year.

Numerous contests are held in an effort to generate excitement and awareness about the cause. The initial contest helped determine the theme for this year. “YOLO Be Drug Free” was the winning entry, as submitted by sixth-grade students. The next content involves photos and students who submit the winning entry will win their school an iPad and $1,000.

Although Red Ribbon Week focuses on drug prevention, the event was born out of respect for fallen DEA agent, “Kiki” Camarena. In 1985, after 11 years in service, Kiki was close to shutting down a major drug pipeline from Mexico to the United States when he was kidnapped and murdered. To honor him, “Camarena Clubs” was formed, in which those who joined pledged to be drug free. With the help of First Lady Nancy Reagan, this expanded into the Red Ribbon Week celebrated today.

Red Ribbon Week begins on October 23rd and continues through the 31st. Children in participating schools will be bringing home materials that parents can use to begin conversations with their kids about the dangers of drug use. Those who have children attending schools that do not participate in the program can visit RedRibbon.org to make a pledge and download materials for use at home.
