The Josh Kirby Estate has announced an exclusive partnership with Seattle-area based games developer MetaArcade, providing Kirby’s art for use within its upcoming game, a digital remastering of the iconic tabletop RPG, Tunnels & Trolls. Featuring Kirby’s original creations, MetaArcade will debut its prototype of Tunnels & Trolls at Gen Con, held Aug. 4-7 in Indianapolis, celebrating the game’s 40th consecutive attendance.Rob Liano, Chief Marketing Officer of the Josh Kirby Estate, said “Josh was creative and innovative and we couldn’t be more excited about bringing his distinctive work to life for new audiences on digital platforms by partnering with fellow innovators like MetaArcade.”
Born on the outskirts of Liverpool, England in 1928, Kirby’s career as a professional artist started in the 1950’s and spanned six decades. He is best known for his iconic science fiction, horror, and fantasy book covers that distinguish countless titles by literary legends including Sir Alfred Hitchcock, Ian Fleming, Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne, Ray Bradbury, Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.G. Wells, and most famously, Sir Terry Pratchett of Discworld fame.
Kirby was highly sought after by the time the 1980s rolled around, yet he lent his talents to creating the interior art and full-color covers for a limited series of Tunnels & Trolls books, at the time, distributed only in the United Kingdom. Kirby’s unmistakable art for Tunnels & Trolls has largely been out of print for decades, and will now play an integral role in MetaArcade’s remastering of Tunnels & Trolls for digital platforms, including iOS, Android, PC, and Mac.

Dedicated to designing accessible self-publishing tools for gamers, MetaArcade’s Tunnels & Trolls will provide players with all of the series’ existing adventures, and allow them to create, play and publish their own using the game’s rules system on the MetaArcade Adventures Platform.
