International Flavor To Meet International Travelers At New International Airport

To celebrate 50 years as a thriving airport, county officials rebranded the airport serving Outagamie County as Appleton International Airport.

As the economy continued to grow in northeastern Wisconsin, the members of the Outagamie County board wanted to make sure they were poised to grow with it. This decision led to the securing of a new customs and inspection office at the Outagamie County regional airport and with it, the opportunity to give the airport a new name. On August 21st, the 50th anniversary of when service first began at the airfield, it was renamed the Appleton International Airport.

"I think it's great for our airport, but this is a clear cut sign that the Fox Valley economy is on the rise," County Executive Thomas Nelson said in an interview with Jim Collar and first published at postcrescent.com. Many Appleton Wisconsin restaurants and other businesses agreed when he said, "We're not just a regional presence, but have an international footprint."

When discussing ideas for renaming the airport, a special committee conceived for the task realized that 80 percent of the travelers were coming to the region for business, and it was the name Appleton – and not Outagamie County – that they were familiar with. By embracing the name, the committee reasoned it would resonate better with people looking to travel to the area, a sentiment shared by many of the local businesses.

“Anything that helps bring more people to the area means more people coming to experience our restaurant, and that is a good thing,” said Kim Finnell, one of three owners of Osorio’s Latin Fusion restaurant, a relative newcomer on the scene but already one of the most successful and highest rated Appleton, Wisconsin restaurants. Along with Executive Chef Liborio Osorio and co-General Manager Edgar Osorio, the restaurant opened in 2012 and has already grown to include a full catering program as well as an expanded outdoor dining area. “We think this is going to be a great opportunity for all the businesses in the area.”

The rebranded airport is not just about bringing more people in; the new name comes at the same time their largest carrier, Allegiant, announced new flights and departures. "We're very excited to announce these new routes and the expansion of our ultra-low-cost air service to two new cities," said Jude Bricker, Allegiant Travel Company Senior Vice President of Planning, talking with reporters for an article on Yahoo Finance. That expansion includes two weekly flights from Appleton International to the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, one of the major destinations for the discount airline. "These new nonstop flights will launch just in time for travelers to jet away to a sunny destination during the winter months."

Finnell and her partners are especially excited about their close proximity – about a five minute drive – to the airport. “Even when they get around to expanding the services for their customers,” she said smiling, “we’re pretty sure none of the restaurants will have an award-winning Latin fusion menu like ours.”
