Dr. Tom Umbach cites Forbes Magazine and several studies as motivation for bariatric surgery.

“The body of research about obesity and diabetes is immense and continues to grow,” Dr. Tom Umbach of Blossom Bariatrics shares. “A recent article published on Forbes.com indicates that financial costs of diabetes have risen 4-5% annually since 2011.”

Dr. Umbach refers to Bruce Japsen’s 08 May 2015 Forbes Magazine article, “It Costs $10K More To Treat People With Diabetes, Insurers Say.” The article highlights the annual costs associated with diabetes--close to $15,000 for diabetics, compared with $4,300 for non-diabetics; insurance company trends indicate that out-of-pocket expenses for diabetics will continue to rise.

As these studies are reported, they continue to emphasize health and financial costs related to obesity, and “Life can feel bleak,” Dr. Tom says, “especially for those struggling with obesity and obesity-related conditions.”

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports on its website that:
More than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese[, and]
Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer (which are some of the leading causes of preventable death.

Published in 2012, Alvin Powell’s Harvard Gazette article, “Obesity? Diabetes? We’ve Been Set Up,” shares the findings of a “study to document the extraordinarily tight connection between obesity and type 2 diabetes.” The report “showed that being even slightly overweight increased diabetes risk five times, and being seriously obese increased it 60 times.”

Powell continues, “Studies have shown that becoming overweight is a major risk factor in developing type 2 diabetes. Today, roughly 30 percent of overweight people have the disease, and 85 percent of diabetics are overweight.”

“However, in the midst of all the doom-and-gloom, apocalyptic health care scares, I want people to have hope,” Dr. Tom encourages. “You don’t have to be a statistic. My recent eBook, ‘Lighten Your Load,’ shares how by significantly decreasing excess weight, you can also significantly reduce associated health conditions and their costs, if not eliminate them altogether, including type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and even avoid hip and knee replacement!”

Dr. Tom affirms, “I see the weight, both literal and figurative, disappear from my patients’ lives and see hope and relief take its place. Health, lifestyles, relationships, jobs--they all get a new lease on life.”
