Dr. Glenn M. Ihde and his team at Ihde Surgical Group have made a new and advanced way of treating acid reflux disease available for patients. Reflux disease affects almost 60 million Americans each month, with a quarter of the population experiencing weekly symptoms.

The procedure is called Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication, or TIF EsophyX at the Ihde Surgical Group.

“With such a terribly high number of people suffering from acid reflux disease,” Ihde said, “it's important to make available appropriate preventative options. Our latest is through Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication, a less invasive procedure.”

A weakened valve at the junction of the esophagus and stomach usually causes acid reflux disease. This lower esophageal sphincter (LES) can be strengthened with a surgical procedure called a fundoplication when more conservative treatment has failed.

Using TIF, a procedure can be performed similar to the Nissen Fundoplication without any incisions through the skin or the complications associated with more invasive surgical procedures. This relatively new and advanced procedure is a natural orifice surgery that allows the surgeon to repair the LES using an instrument called EsophyX that can be introduced through the patient's mouth.

“The procedure reconstructs the body's natural physical barrier to reflux,” Ihde said. “We use the EsophyX to gently fold tissue to eliminate the effects of acid reflux disease. It's an advanced method, but it's simple and effective.

Typical procedures require 30 to 40 minutes to complete anti-reflux barrier construction and strengthen the LES. Patients often return to normal activities within a few days after the procedure.

“It's important to all of us at the Ihde Surgical Group that our patients get back to their lives quickly,” Ihde said. “The greatest aspect of this procedure is its efficiency. We get in and out with the patient under anesthesia for a minimal amount of time, and they are back moving in working a few days later. Even better, they're acid reflux disease concerns are wiped away.”
