Home security and alarm systems are no longer considered a luxury; they are a modern day necessity. According to Safeguardtheworld, homes without security or alarm systems are up to 300% more likely to be broken into. The Uniform Crime Report was done by the FBI in 2010 also stated that there were an estimated 2,159,878 burglaries in America, and of all burglaries, 60.5 percent involved forcible entry, and burglaries of residential properties accounted for 73.9 percent of all burglary offenses.

Keeping all that in mind, homeowners should never take any risks when it comes to home security, especially when they are planning a vacation where they’ll be away for a week or more. The Greenwich Study of Residential Security report states that homes without a security system are 2.7 to 3.5 times more likely to be burglarized.

Home automation is one way to ensure a home’s safety during vacations. A smart home gives its owner many features and options that can deceive burglars and make it seem like someone is actually in the house. One of the features that can be scheduled and/ or controlled even from afar is lights turning on and off in different rooms of the house, in addition to blinds opening and closing every now and then, which can also be used as a way to make the house seem inhabited. If burglars were watching the house, they would not know that the house is empty, or at least they will know that it is automated and secured.

Alarm systems should also be armed at all times, and if a house happens to have surveillance cameras, they can be linked to smart phones so homeowners can stay updated on what’s happening in their homes. In the event of a break-in using the front door, or by breaking a window, sensors would go off notifying the security company which in turn will notify the police. Homeowners can also receive notifications, videos or screenshots sent to their phones, in order to stay updated and know when someone is at their door at all times.
