Getting ahead of the game is what the game is all about. It only makes sense that High School students who have had experience during their academic years are more likely to secure good jobs upon graduation, especially if those jobs are actually in their particular field of study. Not only are technical colleges recognizing this, but technical high schools are also. In general their missions are all the same: to prepare students to successfully enter into the workplace by promoting achievement, individual responsibility, confidence, and life long learning.Savvy companies are also recognizing the importance of high school experience. One such company, MARATHON COLLISION, located in the Charleston, SC market recognizes this in a big way. “Hiring a high school student employee is a great opportunity for companies,” says General Manager Robert Sadeghian. “Students are like sponges and eager to get out in the real world. MARATHON is mentoring them and creating a new generation of technicians by recently partnering with Dorchester County Career and Technology Center (DCCTC).” Offering three programs that relate to the auto body repair business, DCCTC has a vision to be a leader in blending academic courses with career and technology education to provide an educated and skilled workforce. James Villeponteaux, School to Work/Job Placement Counselor said, “MARATHON is a great partner and offers a variety of opportunities for students in the program areas of automotive collision repair, automotive technology, and welding.” All three of which are areas relating to the work MARATHON performs on a daily basis as the Charleston area’s leading collision repair center.
More than anytime in the recent past, today there is a need in the workforce for technical training. Companies like MARATHON know this and are on the forefront of partnering with technical schools to help guide and further student success. But don’t think this is a one-sided equation. MARATHON enjoys this opportunity as much as the student employees. “Fresh minds and eager to learn students make excellent employees for companies with technical jobs. Today, experienced technicians and painters have the ability to earn a six figure income,” said Sadeghian.
DCCTC’s Auto Collision Repair program is designed to instruct students in the repair of today’s auto vehicles through the use of specialized tools and equipment. All areas of automotive repair are studied from automotive construction and frame alignment to the art of computerized paint mixing and refinishing. The Auto Technology courses provide instruction on components, systems, repairs and maintenance. Students receive hands-on learning in all areas of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) which is the certification program for that all mechanics and technicians must acquire. Finally, the third program area offered is Welding Technology where students learn skills in the art of electric shielded metal, gas metal and tungsten welding. Again, all areas required in an automotive collision repair facility.
DCCTC opened its doors in 1970 and has continued to be a leader in integrating both academic and career skills in providing students the resources, skills and knowledge to have successful futures.
