Growing Problem of Algae Eating On Roofs Across The Nation, According to New Study

Share this news:

There is a growing algae, mold, mildew, and moss are eating roofs all across America. Especially, in the east coast and the state of Texas. This will not only break down the roof but is also a health hazard.

There is a growing algae problem on roofs with asphalt shingles across the nation, a new study shows. Ugly black streaks and / or green stuff growing on roofs across the nation are not only an ugly eye-sore that takes away from the beauty of homes and properties by are feeding off of the limestone in the shingles– which will cause a break in the shingle pad. The black streaks staining the roofs are actually a bacteria called Gleocapsa Magma. Moss and Lichens can be present as well, but only show up after the fungal growth has started. This eating a roof’s shingles reduces the life of a asphalt shingle roof.

While these growths have spread throughout the northeast, west coast, south east, Dallas, and Fort Worth in recent years and are a common site in many regions. These organisms grow on the north and west side of the roof because of the warm, moist environment that a roof creates and due to the lower levels of sunlight on these sides.

On the bright side, advances in cleaning techniques have been developed that will safely remove these microorganisms. Soft wash systems are now being used with environmentally safe chemicals. Justin Stanfield, from DFW Best Roofing states “We have invested in the equipment and training to professionally remove these stains. The service is relatively inexpensive. Especially, when you consider the cost of a new roof, and that most likely insurance is not going pay for a roof broke down because of algae and mold.” Roofing companies in Dallas, and Roofing companies in Fort Worth are busy year round trying to take care of this situation.

A major problem is occurring especially in Texas where is not uncommon to find roofs with small hail hits on a roof, and if in addition to that there is also growing algae; the roof may be headed for more troubles in the near future. Especially areas around the DFW metroplex like Allen; Roofing in Allen has been busy cleaning the roofs of homeowners.

Roofs that are infested with mold, mildew, etc, are also a health hazard. For a list of the health problem issues; go to the blog at the website listed below.
