According to multiple reports published in Environmental Health Perspectives and Ecotoxicology, the sunscreen used by swimmers, sunbathers, and boaters is killing the world’s coral reefs. Protected reefs such as: The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, is banning tourists from using chemical based sunscreens in order to preserve what is left of the coral reef. In one study, researchers found that sunscreen contains four would-be culprits – paraben, cinnamate, benzophenone, and a form of camphor - which awaken dormant viruses in the algae (zooxanthellae) which lives inside coral species responsible for maintain the reefs. The viruses reproduce rapidly, causing the host algae to burst, and subsequently release the viruses into the ocean water to poison surrounding coral communities.
