Full Hearing Test in Atlanta Offered as National Hearing Test Follow-Up

The brand new National Hearing Test at nationalhearingtest.org enables any individual to complete a preliminary hearing screening in under ten minutes with their telephone.

The National Hearing Test, a telephone-based functional Hearing Test developed with National Institute of Health (NIH) funding, is a wonderful first step in diagnosing loss of hearing unilaterally or bilaterally. Although a huge step forward in drawing attention to hearing loss nationwide and conducting initial screenings, the telephone-based test has certain limitations. It's not a substitute for the complete hearing tests performed by audiologists. The Audiologists at Atlanta Hearing Associates believe that spreading the word about the National Hearing Test is very important. Equally important is having local audiologists available in Atlanta to perform Comprehensive Hearing Exams and offer personalized advice for people who score outside the normal range on their screening.

The National Hearing Test can be found at nationalhearingtest.org and costs eight dollars. During Better Speech and Hearing Month, the test is free of charge during May 2014. The test screens for one particular type of hearing problem – the ability to distinguish speech from noise – known to audiologists as functional hearing. At the conclusion of the screening, the system immediately gives a rating for each ear. The possible ratings are “Normal”, “Slightly Below Normal” or “Poor”. The directions given after the screening steer participants to local audiologists. The instructions that follow the test state, “If your results from the National Hearing Test were “marginal or below normal,” you should make an appointment for a complete hearing evaluation by a certified hearing professional. Even if your results are in the “normal” range but you still have concerns about your hearing, we encourage you to seek a complete hearing evaluation as well.”

Atlanta Hearing Associates is available for comprehensive hearing testing for residents of Atlanta and adjacent areas. They are delighted to answer the follow-up questions from anyone who participated in the National Hearing Test and to arrange for a more complete hearing assessment. The audiologists are delighted about the publicity that the National Hearing Test is producing for hearing impairment in the United States and encourage anyone who suspects a hearing problem to take the telephone-based test (especially during the free testing period). As more people are screened, the demand for in-office hearing testing and individualized treatment plans and follow-up health care rises too. Atlanta Hearing Associates is excited to position themselves as the best local provider of hearing testing in Atlanta that residents can visit after completing the national screening.

The National Hearing Test is an excellent screening resource and the hearing care team at Atlanta Hearing Associates hopes that many people will take advantage of it; however, its not the ideal first step for everyone. It requires the coordination to type in many strings of numbers into the keypad and a telephone with a wall-mounted jack to get reliable results. People in Atlanta who suspect a hearing problem and who might have difficulty completing the test by phone should directly schedule an appointment for a comprehensive hearing evaluation at Atlanta Hearing Associates.
