Freewheel Project offers youth programs that blend actions sports, academic achievement, leadership development and so much more into one exciting experience. As an organization, Freewheel Project is committed to helping change lives of disadvantaged or “at-risk” youth through the development, encouragement and strengthening of their work within the communities. They use extreme sports, as well as their partnerships with other leading organizations in their community to teach the children in a fun and friendly environment things like substance abuse prevention, leadership skills development, personal finance basics and one-on-one mentoring.

Freewheel Project is most widely known for its 9 week BMX summer camp held in Fresno, CA at Woodward Park’s BMX track.. The organization’s focus at the camp is to give kids an experience they won’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s the thrills of riding a BMX course with professional instruction, the life skills taught by CEO and founder Tony Hoffman or the personal finance course taught by Fresno County Federal Credit Union, the kids are sure to be challenged. They are also afforded the opportunity of graduating with a brand new BMX bike. No child is charged for participating and this year over 100 kids graduated and earned bikes.

Tony Hoffman, the founder and executive director of the Freewheel Project is a retired elite professional BMX racer. He founded FreewheelProject in 2011 with a vision to start an organization centered around extreme sports to reach out to youth to inspire them to beat  the odds and bring opportunities to them that otherwise would not be possible.

Since Tony was a professional BMXer, it was only right for him to begin his vision with the Freewheel Project using the sport in which gave to him, BMX racing.

Tony also speaks to schools and kids across the country sharing his personal life story and experience falling into the snares of substance abuse. His story of having it all and losing it to drugs and time in prison captivates the audiences who hear him speak. His ability to overcome the obstacles in his life and becoming a world class athlete and founder of a non-profit giving back to the youth inspires his audiences to follow their dreams and make the right choices.

Tony envisioned hundreds of kids who would come together in one location, with one goal in mind and unified by sport. Besides the fulfillment and smiles that extreme sports brings, Tony also wanted the kids who participated in the Freewheel Project programs to be equipped with leadership skills, academic mentoring, substance abuse education and prevention, counseling, and an understanding of personal finances.

One of Tony’s greatest visions has been the B.A.R.S program, (Behavioral & Academic Restoration through Sports). The B.A.R.S program is a collaborated venture alongside Fresno’s highly renowned literacy organization, Reading and Beyond, as well as Fresno State University’s,Jan and Bud Richter Center. Together they work to raise academic performance and change negative behaviors in at risk youth with a new and exciting approach, BMX racing. Daily investments are made into the lives of selected participants throughout the school year, named apprentices, who are tutored academically, undergo life enrichment courses with Tony Hoffman and travel weekly to local BMX tracks to participate in the sport of BMX racing. The B.A.R.S program offers a non-traditional sport as a means to motivate at risk youth to invest into themselves academically and improve overall literacy, improve behaviors at home and in school as well as raise their overall health through physical activity racing BMX.

All proceeds of the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament will benefit Freewheel Project. The Freewheel Project website has full details about the sessions at this year’s event. Interested parties can visit here: http://www.freewheelproject.org/index.php/events/3rd-annual-charity-golf-tournament
