On Sunday, December 7, the 33rd annual ABATE Florida Toy Run was held. The run began at the Merritt Square Mall in Merritt Island, FL and ended at Wickham Park Pavilion in Melbourne FL. Attendees were asked to bring $10 or one new unwrapped toy. The event’s goal was to inspire toy donations for the Christmas season, and the toys were donated to Shriners Hospital for Children and other local charities. Vendors, food, drinks, music, games, and a general carnival-like atmosphere prevailed. For the 33rd year in a row, the event was a resounding success, and several charities in Brevard County will be able to provide better care and service to the community this Christmas.
The Toy Run began in 1981 and is organized every year by the Brevard Chapter of American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE) of Florida. ABATE fights for motorcycle rights while at the same time working to educate citizens about motorcycles and motorcycle safety. By hosting charitable events like the Toy Run and becoming involved in their community, members of ABATE hope to change the image of the biker. They strive to do away with the negative connotations that have become associated with biker culture, and their success with the Toy Run is just another step on that path.
