Fish Oil Helps Reduce Nicotine Cravings, Says New Study Published In The Journal of Psychopharmacology

This Omega-3 supplement was found to boost Omega-3 deficiencies in many smokers--making it easier for them to quit the habit.

Everybody is aware that smoking can be a deadly pastime, yet millions of people do not have the power to quit. There are drugs on the market that can be of assistance, but they all have side effects. The new study recently published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology makes it clear that Omega-3 Fish Oils can help people get off the Nicotine habit.

"The substances and medications used currently to help people reduce and quit smoking are not very effective and cause adverse effects that are not easy to cope with," said lead study author Sharon Rabinovitz Shenkar, head of the addictions program at the University of Haifa's School of Criminology department and of the Psychopharmacology Laboratory at Bar-Ilan, in a news release. "The findings of this study indicated that Omega-3, an inexpensive and easily available dietary supplement with almost no side effects, reduces smoking significantly."

PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) deficiency, in particular EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and (DHA) docosahexaenoic acid, has also been linked to reduced psychological health and ability to cope with stress. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study, craving did not return to baseline values in the month that followed treatment discontinuation. This is the first study demonstrating that Omega-3 supplementation reduces tobacco craving in regular smokers, compared to placebo treatment.

The report should be enough to spur smokers into giving fish oils a try. However, consumers should be aware that not all fish oils are equal.

According to Frank Anderson, a spokesperson from Nutrusta, a natural supplement company, "It’s all about how well the fish oil would be absorbed by the body, and this is largely dependent on the method of delivery, and how the fish oil is processed."

Cold water anchovies are one of the best sources for fish oil as larger fish often contain toxic metals like Mercury. Nutrusta’s process uses Supercritical CO2 Extraction; while it is a more costly process, the CO2 prevents oxygen from being exposed to the oil, and inhibits the oil from degradation, which would lead to rancidity. Rancid fish oil only contributes to the inflammation that is at the root cause of every major disease known to humans. This Omega-3 Formula has been hailed as containing other active ingredients not found in other supplements. Its 6:1 ratio of DHA to EPA, along with Astaxanthin and Vitamin D3 are what makes this product unique.
