Roger Federer has slipped to No. 5 in the world rankings and has struggled to live up to his impeccably high standards in 2013. The 17-time slam winner fell below expectations during the grass swing when he made a second round exit at Wimbledon and his recent defeat against Federico Delbonis in Hamburg has provided his critics with plenty to talk about.Recent results encouraged Federer to accept a late entry into the Swiss open in Gstaad, an event that he hasn't competed in since 2004 when he won the title. He admits that his season has been challenging and he's keen to return to winning ways and get used to his new racket, which is roughly 8 percent larger than the frame that he used to win his slams.
“Clearly I’ve been asking myself questions of how can I get out of, I wouldn’t call it a slump because I did win Halle in between, and I know that the game’s just around the corner,” said Federer at the start of the week. “It’s just important that I take the right decisions, how to move forward from here and then how I bounce back, because usually when things don’t go so well I find a way, and that’s what I’m looking for right now.”
Federer is the standout player in the main draw in Gstaad though there are several capable contenders ready to challenge him for the title. One such player is his Olympics doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka, who enters as the second seed. Janko Tipsarevic and Juan Monaco are the third and fourth seeds respectively.
Federer will begin his campaign on Thursday with a match against Daniel Brands. The German took a set from Rafael Nadal at this year's French Open and also pushed Roger to three sets last week in Hamburg. This match could be a roller-coaster ride for Federer fans.
