Fats Removed through Liposuction Turn Out to be a Source of Stress-Resistant Stem Cells

Fats removed through liposuction can be used to cure diabetes, possibly prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, tissue regeneration, repair heart problems or prevent kidney problems among many others.

The use of stem cells to treat a number of body ailments has been around for quite a while now. Today another breakthrough in sciences and cosmetic surgery surfaced.

It turns out that the unsightly fats that are giving everyone unsightly bulges are actually rich sources of stem cells. These can be used to cure diabetes, possibly prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, tissue regeneration, repair heart problems or prevent kidney problems among many others.

This discovery was done by the researchers from the UCLA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology after they isolated a new population of primitive and stress-resistant human pluripotent stem cells that can be easily taken from fat tissues. These stem cells can differentiate into any cell type that would make up any organ in the body without genetic modification.

This discovery was made accidentally after an equipment failure killed all the stem cells except for the Muse-AT cells. The team discovered that these Must-AT cells are not only able to survive severe stress but they might even be activated by it.

These stem cells have laid dormant in the fat tissues unless they are lain in very harsh conditions. It was even found that these cells can survive in conditions where only cancer cells can survive. Examination showed that these isolated fat tissue expressed embryonic stem cell markers and has the tendency to differentiate into liver, skin, fat, bone, muscle, neuronal and cardiac cells.

The doctors extract the fats in an hour-long procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. The patients are not even expected to undergo a full liposuction procedure in order to get the amount of fat in order to gather the stem cells. Even a small amount, around 20cc, will already suffice. The fat gathered is then sent overnight to a stem cell bank called Adicyte. Once received these stem cells are frozen overnight for 20 years or more.

For those patients who had liposuction done in order for the purpose of having these stem cells harvested is like hitting two birds with one stone. There is no telling what the future will bring and what ailment one might encounter. They are not sure if these stem cells will be used or not but it is comforting for them to know that they are there if future emergencies arise which would call for their use. The total cost of extracting and preparing the stem cells for banking can go for $2000. Afterwards, it is going to cost the customer $120 a year for the storage of these stem cells.

However an article in the 2012 Scientific American Awards cautions people to be wary of untested stem cell treatments and products which are marketed to remove wrinkles and make the skin more youthful. The study was published in the June 5 edition of the online science journal PLOS ONE.
