Fantasy Baseball Comes Back to Real Life As MLB Opening Day Dramatics Play Out

MLB’s opening day didn’t disappoint the sell-out crowds while diamond images from across the country flooded the web in grand fashion.

Some of the stars shined while some players looked like they needed more practice time with faster pitching machines as too many delayed swing attempts cracked more air than baseballs. With over 160 games to play, the unsung heroes of the baseball equipment business will be actively participating in the boom and the bust—all season long.

Today's baseball fans everywhere are pushing to have MLB’s opening day become a national holiday as millions excused themselves from going to work in order to catch the excitement. The Atlantic Cities front page let the pictures do the talking from New York and all the way to Los Angeles with a pan snapshot from the colonnades behind home plate. While attendance is set to break all-time records this year, the baseball equipment business is geared to do the same with top-of-the-line baseball pitching machines for sale and batting cages to boot.

Even though dedicated baseball equipment store owner Steve Klein recently received a warehouse full of batting machine inventory, missing out on the opening day festivities didn’t seem to be an option:

“I shut the shop down at noon yesterday to catch the Dodgers play the World Series champs at the new and improved Dodger Stadium. Absolutely amazing! This decades-old rivalry is still one of the best in the game. And how ‘bout that Clayton Kershaw? The lefty’s a virtual hit it if you can batting machine. He’s the only pitcher in the last 50 years to throw a complete game shutout and hit a homer in the same game. If he stays healthy, we’re in for a real treat.”

Klein’s eyes quickly glanced down at Yahoo’s 2013 MLB injury report while leaning against one of his brand-new pitching machines for sale. The word healthy seemed to shift his focus:

“Have you seen this? I can’t believe how many guys are on the DL at the start of the season. My Fantasy team’s already taking a shot in the arm - some of these guys won’t even be able to step into the baseball cages for at least 2 months. There’s gotta be over a hundred names on this list, and some big names at that. Some Fantasy Baseball owners are gonna have to do some sweating and shuffling for a while. Santana’s out for the season. Hanley Ramirez, Chris Carpenter and Chase Headley are just a few of the unexpected big money snafus, but it’s all part of the game and we’ll just have to deal with it.”

Other opening day highlights included Bryce Harper’s two home runs and an outfield assist while Strasburg hurled seven shutout innings as the Nats blanked the Marlins. The Angels outlasted the Reds in 13 to kick off the first inter-league opening day match-up in MLB history.

Klein had some parting words for the baseball world while helping his employees’ ship out a half-dozen batting cages headed for the Heartland:

“All in all, opening day lived up to the hype. I saw a few Little League coaches with their teams down the third base line, so I guess playing hooky for a day made sense to a lot of people. With my new line of baseball pitching machines for sale, the shop will be open a little later than usual for the next few months.”
