Click-A-Brick, an independent educational toy company, applauds the findings of a recent report by the Council of Canadian Academies. Part of the research undertaken stresses the importance of building fundamental STEM skills in early childhood.The report states that STEM skills have been advanced as central to innovation and productivity growth, which are in turn necessary for improving standards of living. It found that those skills open doors to a range of education and employment options. By increasing the quality and level of fundamental skills for STEM among all learners at the preschool, primary, and secondary education levels, it represents a strategic, long-term approach towards the goal of increasing productivity and growth.
Click-A-Brick Co-Founder Jason Smith expressed admiration for the Council’s findings and what it has to say about the labor landscape.
“I’m in complete agreement with the study,” Smith said. “After all, the workforce of tomorrow is going to be shaped by the children of today. If children are going to be scientists and engineers, they have to be afforded the circumstances to experiment with STEM skills.”
Child development experts agree that when it comes to STEM, it's never too early to start. When a young child’s brain is developing, it forms trillions of connections between the brain cells. These connections are essential, as the more connections a child has, the faster he or she can process information. Educational toys in early childhood provide for hands-on problem solving, develop spatial and fine motor skills, build self-confidence and creativity. They can foster an early interest in science, technology, math and engineering.
Georg de Gorostiza, Co-Founder of Click-A-Brick Toys, welcomes the Council’s findings on exposing children to STEM related activities. “We have to get kids interested in learning new things,” de Gorostiza said. “And the answer is simple, I think. Just make it fun. Look, there’s no doubt toys and games provide opportunities for critical thinking. So, for example, letting kids play with colored pattern blocks or bricks is a great way to teach them about geometry and even engineering. That’s why we designed toy sets like Mighty Machines to allow children to discover that learning can be fun.”
Click-A-Brick believes that making learning fun for children will segue into a desire to explore; something that can enhance problem-solving and decision-making abilities, which are essential skills in any work setting.
“By exposing children to STEM skills in early childhood, we plant the the seeds for the future,” de Gorostiza said. “They will be the drivers of our economy and society. Therefore, they should be provided with every opportunity they need in order to succeed.”
